Exciting New Teen Yoga Class!

We are delighted to announce the launch of our new yoga class specifically designed for teenagers, generously sponsored by National Lottery funding. This initiative aims to support teenage well-being through the transformative practice of yoga. The class is tailored to the unique needs and pace of teenagers aged 12-18, providing a supportive and enriching environment for young people to thrive.

About the Class

Yoga for 12-18s will run on Mondays 4.30 - 5.30pm and is tailored to the needs and pace of this age group, taught by experienced Iyengar yoga teacher Sarah Delfas. This class offers a unique opportunity for teenagers to engage in a physical activity that not only improves their physical health but also enhances their mental and emotional well-being.

Meet Sarah Delfas

Sarah Delfas has been teaching Iyengar yoga since 2002 and holds a Level 3 Iyengar yoga teaching certificate. She strongly believes that yoga is for everyone, and the legacy of BKS Iyengar’s devotion and exploratory practice has made yoga accessible to all. As a mother of four, Sarah has personally experienced the help yoga provides through the changes of pregnancy and motherhood, and she has witnessed the joy and benefits it brings to children and teenagers.

Sarah enjoys teaching beginners as much as mentoring trainee teachers and is the co-organizer of the Iyengar Yoga (UK) Family Yoga Camp, Yogapushpanjali. She has studied at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, and is very excited about bringing Iyengar yoga to young people at the Anderida Practice.

Benefits of Yoga for Teenagers

Yoga offers numerous benefits for teenagers and helps deal with the physical and mental stresses of adolescence. The benefits of a regular class include:

  • Improved Physical and Mental Health: Yoga helps improve flexibility, strength, and balance, which are crucial during the growth spurts of adolescence. Getting to know how their bodies work through the asanas helps students to stay grounded.

  • Mental Clarity and Focus: Practising yoga asanas requires concentration and can enhance mental clarity, aspects which extend beyond the mat into school and daily life.

  • Emotional Balance: Teenagers often experience heightened emotions. Practising yoga asanas can bring a sense of balance and calm.

  • Social Connection: Participating in a group yoga class fosters a sense of community and belonging. Classes aim to be fun and joyful whilst also challenging this age group.

  • Self-awareness and Confidence: Yoga helps teenagers to connect to and get to know themselves, both on a physical and emotional level. Students will find that there are some asanas they can do very easily and others that bring challenges – and as we all have different bodies these challenges will be different for each person in the room. This helps to build confidence, acceptance and a will to keep working at it.

Yoga practice strengthens, relaxes and fills me with wakefulness. It helps me all along the school year.

Students tend to leave a class refreshed, calm and uplifted after a long and tiring day at school. Here is what some teenage students have said about their yoga class experience:

“Yoga gives me a chance to reset myself - both physically and mentally. It is challenging as I’m not that flexible, but it’s also rewarding and leaves me feeling much better than I did before.”

“For me, being as inflexible as I am, yoga has helped with other sports which require flexibility. The yoga class has become a safe place where I can not only physically but also mentally find peace after a busy school day.”
