Move your body every day in every way!

Do you experience aches and pains, stiffness or movement restrictions? Did you know that fascia, a multi-layered connective tissue in our bodies can be a cause of these discomforts? Myofascia supports the body, it’s like a big sleeping bag with many pockets that our muscles and organs fit in, it stabilises and connects everything together from the back of our eyes right down to the soles of our feet.

Restrictions in one part can affect another part of the body. For example, tension in the head can create low back tension, or a tight neck and back can cause feet issues.

Myofascial lines have been mapped out by Structural Integration Therapist Thomas Myers, see below.

There are 3 main types of fascia:

  1. Superficial Fascia; lies underneath the skin and dermis, connecting skin to the rest of the body – the bones, muscles, and organs.

  2. Deep Fascia; A strong and dense layer supporting and protecting muscles, holding our bones in place, and surrounding tendons, ligaments and blood vessels.

  3. Visceral Fascia; Surrounds our internal organs protecting them, keeping them in place and supporting each to do its function.

Too much sitting and not enough variety of movements can cause restrictions throughout the fascia and lines. I think of it like cling film when you finish with it and roll it in a ball, it’s really difficult to open it out again.

However, if you were to add a little oil that would allow the cling film to move and unstick itself.

Yoga, Pilates, Somatic exercises, and Tai Chi are like the ‘oil’ and are great examples of ways to ensure your fascia stays as flexible and mobile as possible, as it definitely becomes more dehydrated and inflexible as we get older, and especially if we don’t move enough.

There are also many different types of therapeutic interventions that can help to release fascia, such as Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Massage, Myofascial release, Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Acupuncture to name a few.

If you have pain, discomfort and stiffness in your body then consider booking in to see Suzy, Integrative Physiotherapist. She combines traditional Physiotherapy with other complementary techniques, such as Myofascial release and Cranio-Sacral Therapy to support release of myofascia and help restore movement and function. She also specialises in creating one to one exercise programmes combining Yoga, Pilates and Somatic movements which help people to explore appropriate exercises at home, supporting health and wellbeing.
