From Suffering to Smiling: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can End Menstrual Pain

A Common but Overlooked Issue

I used to think that menstrual pain was a minor issue in the UK, as very few patients came to me seeking help for it. However, a recent experience made me realise the importance of addressing this issue.

A Case That Changed My Perspective

An 18-year-old girl came to me with metrorrhagia; she had been bleeding heavily for over three months and was experiencing severe abdominal pain. When I asked why she had chosen traditional Chinese medicine, she explained that a friend had a similar issue and was prescribed contraceptive pills by her GP, but the bleeding didn’t stop, so her family suggested trying acupuncture.

I was shocked to hear this. If painkillers are a superficial solution, contraceptives can be even worse, bringing numerous side effects to these young women! I believe many resort to painkillers or contraceptives because they are unaware of more natural solutions for menstrual issues like cramps and irregular bleeding.

Women shouldn’t have to endure this painful problem every month until they reach 50, and they shouldn’t have to wish for their periods to stop because of the pain.

The Importance of a Healthy Menstrual Cycle

Menstruation is a unique process for women and also acts as an additional channel for eliminating toxins from the body - it’s a gift from nature. Therefore, maintaining a healthy menstrual flow is essential.

Additionally, the state of menstruation is an important indicator of women’s overall health.

Factors like regularity, pain, clotting, and flow volume provide valuable insights into one’s health for a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help

I want all women to know that if you're experiencing menstrual issues such as pain, irregular bleeding, or mood swings, consider trying traditional Chinese medicine. You might find that problems you thought would trouble you for life can be resolved in a short period.

For example, the 18-year-old patient stopped bleeding after just one session, and after two more sessions, her menstrual flow became regular, and the cramps and pain disappeared. My patient is thrilled that she can start her gap year travels without any worries. I hope I can help more women so that they can smile through those few days every month.
